307 South Third Street — Moxley House

Joseph R. Moxley, a tinsmith from Ohio who rose through the ranks to become president of Palmer Hardware which was located at the corner of East State and South Second Street. Moxley and his wife Ellen built this home in 1878. It is one of the few homes in the neighborhood to retain the original slate sidewalk and carriage step.
The Hills are the sixth owners of the home. When they purchased the house in 1999, it was a duplex. They have returned it to a single family home and continue to restore it with a respectful nod to the Victorians. The Hills enjoy collecting antiques and unusual prints. Janet is an avid gardener, and the Hills have transformed the backyard from an empty lawn into a beautiful courtyard garden.
