America in Bloom is Coming to Rockford
Sunday, April 3, 2005

America in Bloom is a volunteer based 501 (c) (3) organization dedicated to "Planting pride in our Communities." This nation-wide beautification program has been building excitement in American communities since 2001, in the form of a contest and has been recognized by Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, J. Dennis Hastert of Illinois, as an important project for America.

Specially trained judges travel across the country evaluating and awarding communities on 8 specific criteria: Floral, Landscape, Urban Forestry, Environment, Tidiness, Community Involvement, Turf & Groundcover and Heritage. This is the framework to a community citizen's quality of life, making America a better place to live, one community at a time.

Promoting neighborhood pride and community involvement is the focus of this national program. Rockford will be in competition with other cities our size. Judges from across the country will be here this summer to judge our floral displays, landscaped areas, anti-litter efforts and urban forestry.

Rockford City of Gardens has selected the perennial coneflower and annual snapdragon to be used for overall floral theme. They encourage their use in abundance for planting this year. Ruth Miller is the director of City of Gardens and she can be reached at 987-1689 if you have any questions concerning.

Along with individual homeowner landscaping projects, Haight Village would like to create a unified neighborhood theme that will showcase our most unique features. We would like to coordinate planting and decoration of our lampposts throughout the Village. Before doing so, we would like a commitment from homeowners that they will take care and water the lampposts that their hoses will reach. Please contact Janet Hill at 963-0490 or by email to let her know the location of the lampposts that will be cared for.

Haight Village has also started a "Spring, Summer, and Fall Plant Flowers and Outdoor Cleanup" campaign to help us prepare for the arrival of the America in Bloom judges. All Rockford neighborhoods are encouraged to spruce up their visual presentation to collectively beautify our city. There are many ways that every can get involved in this community project. Take a look at your own property to see what can be improved. Is it time to trim the bushes, add landscaping, hang baskets, paint the house, fix things or get rid of garbage? This is the year.
