Rockford Wins America in Bloom 2005, Enters International Competition
Saturday, April 1, 2006

In 2005, Rockford excelled in the America in Bloom competition taking top honors in the 100,001 to 300,000 population category. Judges visited our community in June to look at our floral displays, landscaping, turf and groundcovers, environmental efforts, urban forestry, tidiness, and heritage.

Community involvement played a major role in the competition and hundreds of citizens got involved in the process. The judges visited many neighborhoods to get a true feel for the city. They came through Haight Village twice, toured the Erlander Museum, and visited the Natural Land Institute. The judges were very impressed with our neighborhood's strong heritage, its tidiness and its lovely floral displays.

The judges were so impressed during last years America in Bloom competition, that Rockford not only won in its category, but also took special honors, with the judges saying "the city was virtually spotless for the judging. There was almost no litter or graffiti, even in less fortunate neighborhoods."

Because of the great effort made by City of Gardens, Haight Village, and many other organizations and neighborhood associations, we have been invited to compete in Communities in Bloom. This 2006 international competition will include cities across the United States and Canada.

Communities in Bloom started in 1995 with 29 Canadian communities and the idea of fostering civic pride, environmental responsibility and beautification through community participation and friendly competition.

We encourage all to get involved in planting, cleaning and beautification projects. The judges will return to Rockford in August and will once again be looking at the following: floral displays, turf & groundcovers, landscaped areas, natural & cultural heritage conservation, tidiness, environmental awareness, tree/urban forest management and community involvement.
